Not all certificates are equal. Some are mandatory, others give you an edge. Here's what actually matters.
For Seafarers
STCW (Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping)
The foundation. You can't work on any commercial vessel without it. Make sure it's always up to date.
CoC (Certificate of Competency)
Your license to operate. The higher your rank, the more advanced CoC you need.
Tanker Endorsements
If you want to work on tankers (oil, chemical, gas), you'll need the relevant endorsements. They open doors to better-paying positions.
Dynamic Positioning (DP)
Essential for offshore work. DP officers are in high demand.
For Shore-Based Roles
Chartering Certifications (ICS, BIMCO)
If you're going into commercial roles, these add credibility.
ISM/ISPS Auditor
Good for QHSE and compliance roles. Shows you understand the regulatory framework.
Project Management (PMP, PRINCE2)
Useful for technical superintendent and management positions.
Port Management Diplomas
If you're looking at port operations, these can help you stand out.
General Value-Adds
- Language certifications (especially for international roles)
- Advanced Excel/data analysis
- ERP system certifications (SAP, AMOS)
Don't collect certificates just for the sake of it. Focus on what's relevant to your career direction. Quality over quantity - employers can tell the difference.
