You got the job. Now the real work begins. Here's how to start strong.

Before Day One

Research the company properly

Go beyond what you learned for the interview. Understand their fleet, recent news, key clients, organizational structure. Know who the CEO is. Know who your manager reports to.

Prepare your documents

Have everything ready - certificates, ID copies, bank details. Maritime companies often need more documentation than other industries.

Plan your commute

Do a test run if possible. Arriving late on day one is not the impression you want to make.

The First Day

Arrive early

15 minutes before you're expected. Not earlier (awkward), not later (unprofessional).

Dress appropriately

When in doubt, slightly overdress. You can adjust once you see the office culture.

Bring a notebook

You'll be given lots of information. Write things down. It shows you're taking it seriously.

Listen more than you talk

You don't need to prove yourself on day one. Observe, absorb, ask questions.

The First Week

  • Learn names - Make an effort to remember people's names
  • Understand the systems - Every company has different software and processes
  • Find the informal rules - When do people take lunch? How quickly are emails expected?
  • Don't criticize the old way - "At my previous company we did it better" annoys everyone

The First Month

  • Set up one-on-one time with key colleagues
  • Understand how your role connects to others
  • Identify quick wins - small problems you can solve
  • Ask for feedback early

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Trying to change everything immediately
  • Complaining about workload (you just started)
  • Office politics - stay neutral until you understand the landscape
  • Overpromising what you can deliver

First impressions stick. Take the first weeks seriously, stay humble, work hard, and the rest will follow.
