We've seen candidates lose great opportunities because of avoidable mistakes. Here's what to watch out for.
1. Not Researching the Company
Sounds obvious, but you'd be surprised. Know their fleet, trade routes, recent news. "I applied to many companies" is not an acceptable answer to "Why do you want to work here?"
2. Speaking Badly About Previous Employers
The maritime world is small. Even if your last company was terrible, keep it professional. Focus on what you're looking for, not what you're running from.
3. Being Vague About Your Experience
Don't just say you "handled operations." Give specifics: vessel types, fleet size, cargo volumes, systems you used. Numbers make your experience tangible.
4. Forgetting Your Certificates
Bring copies of all relevant certificates. Even for shore roles, having your documentation ready shows you're organized and serious.
5. Unrealistic Salary Expectations
Research the market before the interview. Coming in with an unrealistic number can end the conversation quickly. It's fine to negotiate, but be reasonable.
6. Not Asking Questions
"No questions" suggests you're not really interested. Ask about team structure, typical challenges in the role, growth opportunities, and company culture.
7. Poor Body Language
Especially for video interviews: look at the camera, sit up straight, dress professionally from head to toe (yes, even for video calls).
8. Not Following Up
A brief thank-you email after the interview keeps you on their radar and shows professionalism.
Remember
- Prepare well
- Be genuine
- Let your experience speak for itself
