After years at sea, many seafarers look to settle ashore. It's a big change, but your experience is more valuable than you might think.
Step 1: Identify Your Transferable Skills
You've got more than you realize:
- Leadership and team management
- Crisis handling and problem-solving
- Technical knowledge of vessels and systems
- Understanding of international regulations
- Working under pressure
Step 2: Choose Your Direction
Common shore roles for ex-seafarers:
- Operations: Fleet management, vessel operations
- Technical: Superintendent, technical manager
- Commercial: Chartering, S&P, broking
- QHSE: Safety and compliance roles
- Surveying: Class societies, P&I clubs
- Training: Maritime academies
Step 3: Fill the Gaps
Shore jobs often require:
- Better computer skills (Excel, ERP systems)
- Business communication
- Understanding of commercial aspects
Consider short courses while you're still at sea to build these skills.
Step 4: Rewrite Your CV
Your sea CV won't work for shore applications. You need to translate maritime jargon into business language, highlight achievements (not just duties), and focus on skills relevant to the shore role.
Step 5: Network
Many shore positions aren't advertised. Let people know you're looking to come ashore. Connect with former colleagues who've made the switch.
Step 6: Be Patient
The transition rarely happens overnight. You might need to accept a lower starting position than you'd expect. That's normal - shore career progression works differently.
